Devil's Corner

Wild, spectacular and on the edge of an eco-system of international significance, The Hazards Vineyard at Apslawn is home base for the Brown Family Wine Group's Devil's Corner portfolio and popular cellar door.

The Brown family acquired the East Coast site and the Devil's Corner brand in 2010 as part of their purchase of leading Tasmanian wine company Tamar Ridge. Vendor and forestry giant Gunns Ltd then managed some 400ha of vines across the State.

Initial site selection and vineyard infrastructure were determined in consultation with renowned viticulturist and researcher, Dr Richard Smart. Extensive field work and climate data analysis led him to believe the Apslawn site would experience similar growing conditions to New Zealand's renowned Marlborough wine region.

Twenty years after its initial planting – in 2005 – The Hazards is Tasmania's largest single vineyard (190ha). Its Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir plantings are set out in 35 blocks, each of them managed individually according to seasonal conditions and likely end-product.

Subsequent wines comprise traditional method sparkling and a range of table wines. These are marketed via a three-tier wine portfolio. Entry-level Devil's Corner wines provide a broad commercial base while Resolution and The Hazards give voice to mid-range and super-premium, small batch products.

All wines are made off-site at the company's 3000-tonne Kayena winery in the Tamar Valley.

Visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to immersive wine experiences. The vineyard's timber-clad tower and lookout makes a bold architectural statement. Panoramic views to the Freycinet Peninsula and Moulting Lagoon take in a rare eco-system protected by the internationally renowned Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

Casual ground level and outdoor spaces – including the Hazards Tasting Room and The Courtyard – are complemented by the more atmospheric setting of the Devil's Den underground cellar.

The cellar door is open every day of the week.
